Walk east from Casis Village on a Saturday morning in July 2026 and you can pass a vegan comfort-food kitchen that opened three months ago, a pharmacy that opened three months before Pearl Harbor, and a spring-fed pool that has been filling from the same wells for more than a century. Tarrytown's news cycle is short. Its geography is shorter. Most of what changed this spring sits inside a fifteen-block rectangle you already drive through on the way to O. Henry pickup.

That is the useful thing to notice about 78703 right now. The neighborhood is absorbing new tenants at the pace of a food truck and a wine bar at a time, and they are landing on the same two or three shopping strips that have anchored daily life here since the 1930s. If you want to know what is actually different this summer, you do not need a citywide roundup. You need the block.

What actually opened this spring

Community Kitchen and Taproom opened at 3110 Windsor Road in April, taking the retail slot between Pak Mail and Austin Pets Alive. Owners Marlon Rison and Ericka Dotson spent five years running Community Vegan out of a 1973 Winnebago on East 11th Street before making the jump to a brick-and-mortar in Tarrytown. The menu is plant-based takes on Southern staples: a "fried chicken" sandwich built on oyster mushrooms, lion's mane nuggets, and a surf-and-turf that uses plant-based steak and shrimp. Hours are Wednesday and Thursday 4 to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday noon to 9 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with brunch until 3 on the weekend. The address is still catching up on Google Maps, so the practical direction is to look for the storefront facing Windsor between the mail shop and the shelter.

Bésame Ice Cream, which has built a following elsewhere in the city, added a second Tarrytown truck with a soft opening in early April. It is coffee, ice cream, and treats, which fills a gap the neighborhood has felt every summer for years: somewhere to walk to after dinner that is not a bar.

Those are the two additions this spring that are worth planning around. Everything else on the Windsor and Exposition strips remained where it was.

The summer operating schedule locals actually track

Two things changed at Deep Eddy Pool this year, and both matter if you are the household that treats a morning lap swim as non-negotiable.

The Tuesday Deep Eddy closure is the update most residents have not fully internalized yet. The pool holds 600,000 gallons across a ten-lane, hundred-foot lap section and a one-acre wading pool, all fed from wells 300 and 400 feet down, with water temperatures that stay in the high 60s to mid-70s year round. When it is closed, there is no near substitute inside Tarrytown. Big Stacy on Live Oak is the closest year-round municipal pool the city recommends, and it is a fifteen-minute drive against downtown traffic. If Tuesday is your day, adjust now.

Laguna Gloria's free Thursdays continue to be the best-kept obvious secret in the neighborhood. The 14-acre lakeside campus includes the Driscoll Villa, the Gatehouse Gallery, and the Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park, with grounds open Monday through Saturday 9 to 5 and Sunday 10 to 5. The fall exhibition opens September 18 and runs into January, which gives you a four-month window to make it a Thursday habit before it rotates.

If you drew a circle with a five-minute walking radius around the Windsor and Exposition intersection, you would capture most of the neighborhood's commercial life. Grouping by cross street is more useful than a flat list:

The center was sold in May 2023 to a partnership between Ivy Cos. and 35 South Capital, with facade, landscaping, and common-area updates in the works, so expect visible construction phases through the year.
• West 35th and Winsted. The Contemporary Austin at Laguna Gloria's entrance sits at 3809 W. 35th. Stinson's occupies the top of the neighborhood as a cafe by day and cocktail bar by evening.
• Lake Austin Boulevard. Deep Eddy Cabaret, open since 1951 and still the least fussy room within a mile of the water. Mozart's Coffee on the lake itself. Hula Hut and Abel's on the Lake for a table with a view.
• Enfield Road and West 6th. The original Maudie's for Tex-Mex and margaritas that residents treat as neighborhood infrastructure. Cafe Medici, technically just outside the Tarrytown boundary but on nearly every local's rotation. The Beer Plant on West 6th for 40 taps and a plant-based menu that predates Community Kitchen by several years.

The point of listing them this way is not completeness. It is that every location above is within a fifteen-minute walk of any other. Tarrytown does not have a commercial district. It has three of them, and they are within earshot.

What stays

The pieces of the neighborhood that never move are the ones that shape how new arrivals fit in.

Tarrytown Pharmacy has been at the Windsor and Exposition intersection since December 1941, three generations of the Newberry family in ownership. It is not a nostalgic detail. It is the reason the block in front of it stays legible even as tenants around it rotate.

Mayfield Park and Preserve gives the neighborhood 21 acres of gardens, koi ponds, walking paths, and the resident peacocks that anyone with young children can locate blindfolded. It sits directly adjacent to Laguna Gloria, which means a single afternoon walk covers a National Register park and a contemporary sculpture museum without moving your car.

Lions Municipal Golf Course, "Muny" to anyone who has lived here more than a year, is the oldest public course in Austin and where Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite learned the game. Cisco's at Muny still serves migas and enchiladas on the patio behind the driving range and remains one of the more honest breakfast rooms in the ZIP code.

The West Austin Youth Association at Exposition and Enfield continues to host youth baseball, kickball, basketball, and volleyball on the same fields Tarrytown parents have used for decades. Reed Park's six acres, pool, and wading pool sit a few blocks off Enfield for the households that treat Deep Eddy as too cold or too crowded.

Walsh Boat Landing at the west end of the neighborhood puts anyone with a kayak or paddleboard on Lake Austin in under ten minutes from most Tarrytown driveways. Red Bud Isle's 17-acre off-leash loop is the standing appointment for anyone with a dog and a morning.

The reason to name all of that is not sentiment. It is that a neighborhood where the anchors have been in place for 60 to 90 years absorbs new tenants differently than one still building its street grid. Community Kitchen is not opening into a blank strip. It is opening into a block that already has a pharmacy older than most of its customers and a shopping center under renovation across the street.
